Commencing in 2023, the goal of this full-time three month contract position is to edit and review the manuscripts and other written materials with the Pownal Street Press team. The ideal candidate would be an early-career publishing professional interested in pursuing a career in book editing, or someone who is able to help provide exceptional, informative and engaging content.
Reporting to the Publisher and Editorial Director, responsibilities include:
- Maintain good working relationships with authors and other key staff and freelancers such as production, proofreaders, book designers and marketing personnel.
- Keep track of scheduled dates to ensure books are published on time.
- Review and markup page proofs and online content
- Attend weekly production meetings to review book schedules and discuss any ongoing issues
- Work with marketing team to promote the book by submitting content for both print and online announcements
- Edit and proof marketing copy and books (non fiction and children’s picture books)
- Write photo captions, blurbs, alternative text, catalogue copy and book descriptions
- Track book projects and create timelines
- Fact-check cited materials in publications
Requirements of an Editor:
- Proven working experience as an Editor
- Strong writing / editing / proofreading skills and an excellent portfolio
- Familiarity with Canadian publishing industry standards
- Accustomed to social media best practices in the literary fields
- Bachelor degree in English, Journalism, Publishing, Communications and/or MFA in Creative Writing or equivalent experience in the field
- An eye for detail in proofreading but with a critical eye for developmental and structural editorial methods

The Pownal Street Press team works from home and out of the StartUp Zone in downtown Charlottetown. The eligible candidate can work remotely and/or have access to a work space at the StartUp Zone.
