What is a hybrid/boutique publisher?

Hybrid publishing is a publishing model that focuses on the best of both worlds: platforms for traditional publishing and full package custom publishing solutions.

Providing end to end support for nonfiction and picture book clients, Pownal Street Press partners with authors to create distinct books that serve their own markets and are also available retail. Hybrid publishing creates a bridge between the conventional publishing industry and the self-publishing industry, which can both be limiting platforms for first time authors. What kinds of books does Pownal Street Press publish?

Pownal Street specializes in nonfiction—memoir, self-help, business leadership and health & wellness. We publish in the realm of mind-body-spirit, lifestyle, and family & relationships. We also publish select children’s picture books.

How does the traditional publishing process work?
The traditional publishing process works through submission and acquisition, whereby authors can query their works and have Pownal Street Press take on the costs to publish their book. In this case, the author signs a standard publishing contract with Pownal Street Press. Pownal Street Press pays the author standard industry rates keeping with other traditional publishers.
How long does the process take?

Depending on the state of your manuscript, or the design requirements it will take eight to eighteen months to publish and print your book.

How do I know if my book is a good fit for Pownal Street Press?

Pownal Street Press is committed to helping authors publish their works, but we only want you to invest if we are the right press for you. 

Publishing a book with Pownal Street Press may not be for you if:

  • You write fiction, dystopian graphic novels or YA
  • You cannot use an online platform like Google Docs 
  • You don’t have the capital to invest right now.

Publishing a book with Pownal Street Press may be perfect for you if:

  • You believe in having the right person for the job and you don’t want to figure out how to self publish a book all by yourself. 
  • Your time is important to you and you don’t have time to submit your book to traditional publishing houses and wait for a response.
  • You are serious about your brand and understand residual income. This is reflected in your public profile and/or social media following and you can sell your book directly to your customers.

I’m writing a book, how can you help me?

We can publish your book by providing editorial, design, production, marketing and sales support. If you need help to write your book, we can help with that too.

How does the custom publishing process work?

Our professional publishing service package can be tailored to meet specific author needs. Our package prepares the book for print and coordinates the book’s printing, distribution, marketing and sales into the Canadian and international publishing markets both profitably and successfully. The author keeps 100% of the royalties of their books.

After you submit your application (found here), Pownal Street Press will be in touch with next steps.

Once your book is accepted by Pownal Street Press, we then meet to co-create your project plan. After this meeting you will receive a quote and tentative timeline. We undertake the editing process, and determine what you — the author — is looking for in terms of graphic scope, cover design, interior typesetting and more. Once the editing process begins, the book’s details are uploaded to online retailers, and when ready to print, we liaise with the printer to ensure that you get what you want.

We will also work with you to ensure your book is sold and distributed through the most effective sales channels (online and your local independent bookstore).

Once in the market, you will receive regular sales reports on how your book is doing.
