Pownal Street Press is pleased to announce the upcoming Fall 2025 release of Spells Against the Darkness: Verses of Quiet Magic by renowned Island poet Roderick MacDonald.

Spells Against the Darkness is a compelling and enjoyable exploration of the intimate and universal. From the peace of ‘Prince Edward Island’s Souris Line Road to the clamour of New York City, classic poet Rod MacDonald draws on a variety of lyrical styles to weave his stories into verse.

Dream and gaze into the river

Where mist plumes rise like holy

Incense, in service to the goddess moon

Now the horizon is tinged with gold

Hear the prayers of morning spoken

And a new voice fills the song

“Rod’s use of poetic technique draws the reader in, and for a brief moment, we become a reflection on an ocean wave, a dancer in a window or the pink light of sunset. A beautiful read that will envelop you with its whole being.” says Editor, Mo Duffy. Both whimsical and potent, MacDonald’s Spells Against the Darkness is a lyrical journey through place, memory, and the poetry of life.
