📣 A Call for Brave Stories

We are excited to announce that we are opening our traditional submissions on the first of June, 2025. Although our traditional list is small, it is one that we are very proud of. We take our time in reviewing our submissions; we don’t take many. Last year, we were honoured to publish Are You Listening? by poet Zaynab Mohammed. This fall, we will publish Prism: A Chameleon Finds his Light by first-time author Brady Wells and illustrator Sarah Shortliffe, and the poetry collection Spells Against the Darkness by Roderick Macdonald. To read our full call for submissions, please visit: Voices we need now! Call for submissions for traditional program. – Pownal Street Press

At Pownal Street Press, we use our social purpose as our north star.

We exist to give rise to brave stories, and to be
a light for community and connection.

DO:

  • Submit in the Right Genres
We’re currently accepting nonfiction, memoir, children’s books, poetry and guided journals. Books that explore social issues, lived experience, identity, and empowerment are especially welcome. Memoirs and kids books should be complete, and in poetry, please submit your full collection (30-100 poems)
  • Tell Us Why You’re a Fit
Make it clear why this book belongs on the Pownal Street Press list and why now is the time to publish it.
  • Use Industry-Standard Formatting
    Microsoft Word document
    12 pt font, double-spaced
    File name format: Lastname_Title_2025
  • Be Honest and Original
Disclose any AI-assisted writing or co-authorship clearly. We’re looking for authentic, author-led voices.

Check Submission Dates
Submissions are open until June 30, 2025. Late submissions will not be reviewed for this cycle.

DON’T:

  • Submit Fiction
We’re not accepting novels, short stories, or fictionalized collections at this time.
  • Send Unpolished Drafts
Make sure your submission is clean, edited, and ready to represent your best work.
  • Ignore Our Social Purpose
If your book doesn’t fit our core genres or values, it’s not the right time or place. You can ask yourself, is this a brave story? Is this story a light for community, or connection?
  • Send Without Contact Info
Include your full name, email address, and social media/website if relevant.
  • Resubmit Without an Invite
If we’ve previously passed on a project, please wait for a formal invitation before resubmitting.
  • Forget the Subject Line
